Copilot Token Billing | AI Field Notes #27

GitHub Copilot moves to per-token billing on June 1, replacing request allotments with AI Credits at $0.01 each; heavier models cost more, and the community's early read is that monthly Pro users will get less than before. Two CVEs patched in Microsoft Semantic Kernel this month turned prompt injection into host-level code execution in the Python and .NET versions of the framework; both are fixed in current releases. Anthropic is finalizing a $30 billion round at a $900 billion valuation, overtaking OpenAI, after annual revenue grew from $9 billion to $44 billion in months. Meta begins cutting 8,000 workers Tuesday as it cancels another 6,000 open roles and restructures into AI pods to fund at least $115 billion in 2026 infrastructure.

Google I/O preview: Vertex AI retired, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform takes over

AnalysisAt Google Cloud Next in April, Google retired the Vertex AI brand and launched the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, bundling Agent Studio (a low-code canvas for designing agent reasoning loops), an Agent Development Kit for code-first builders, agent orchestration, a managed runtime called Agent Engine, persistent memory, and access to over 200 foundation models including both Gemini and Claude. The Google I/O keynote starts tomorrow at 10am PT and is expected to carry expanded developer access and Gemini model updates. The rebrand reflects how enterprise engineering teams are actually building: orchestrating agents rather than deploying raw model endpoints, and Google is betting its cloud platform on that shift.

Microsoft's AI security agents found 16 Windows flaws, 4 critical RCEs, before patch

AnalysisMicrosoft's multi-model agentic security system, disclosed May 12, found 16 Windows vulnerabilities before patch this month, four of them critical remote code execution flaws that could have been weaponized. The system topped an internal benchmark, outperforming both static and dynamic analysis tooling. The disclosure came days after Microsoft's Security Blog documented how prompt injection in AI agent frameworks can produce the same RCE class, a detail made sharper by the two Semantic Kernel CVEs patched the same week. AI agents are now finding the category of vulnerability they can also introduce. That simultaneity is not a coincidence.

Anthropic nears $900B valuation on $44B ARR, moving ahead of OpenAI for the first time

AnalysisAnthropic is finalizing a $30 billion fundraising round at a $900 billion-plus valuation, ahead of OpenAI's $852 billion mark from March. Annual revenue run rate grew from $9 billion to over $44 billion in months, enterprise customers spending $1 million or more annually doubled from 500 to over 1,000, and eight of the Fortune 10 companies are now clients. Some early backers are skipping the round, anticipating an IPO later in 2026. Anthropic also signed a deal for SpaceX's entire Colossus 1 supercomputer (220,000-plus NVIDIA GPUs), suggesting the new capital is heading straight into compute.

Europe AI energy crunch: data center costs up 12% as grid waits stretch to 13 years

AnalysisData center capacity costs are rising 12% in 2026 across Europe's five largest markets (Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin, known as the FLAP-D markets), per CBRE research. New facilities wait 7 to 10 years for a grid connection in those markets, rising to 13 in the most congested primary zones. OpenAI cited energy costs as a reason for pausing its UK Stargate project. European electricity prices are structurally higher than US and Asian peers, and are rising further amid the US-Iran war. France and the Nordics are relative winners due to nuclear and hydro mixes. For AI infrastructure, location is becoming a load-bearing constraint.

Colorado AI Act paused: federal court stays enforcement in xAI LLC v. Weiser

AnalysisA US District Court granted a stay of Colorado's AI Act, blocking the state attorney general from initiating investigations until the court rules on xAI's (Elon Musk's AI lab) preliminary injunction motion. Colorado's legislature introduced SB 26-189 as a replacement statute before its session ended May 13; if signed, it takes effect January 1, 2027. Nationally, states have introduced over 1,200 AI bills while the White House presses the DOJ to challenge state AI laws and conditions federal broadband funding on states adopting a 'minimally burdensome' standard. The federal-state tension is not resolving; it is expanding.
